Sather played at UCLA, where she became the 12th player in school history to record 1,000 kills and digs. She left the school 11th in all-time kills. Sather was named to the PAC-10 All-Freshman team, and was honorable mention All-PAC-10 as a junior before being chosen as an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American her senior season. She was also a high jumper on the track and field team.
In high school Sather lettered four years in volleyball as well as three years in track and two in badminton. She was a Mizuno first-team High School All-American in volleyball and set the school record in high jump. She graduated Summa Cum Laude. Sather has two sisters, Kristy and Ally.
