Leever played basketball in college, later turning to volleyball. He received his teaching certificate from Georgia Southwestern State University, and then received a degree in Business Administration from Cumberland University.

Leever is one of eight kids, with his brother Mark getting everybody started in volleyball. Leever is married (Beth), and they have three kids (Lauren, Robbie and Elijah).
